Frequently asked questions

What is a Texas bee ag exemption?

A bee ag exemption is a 1-d-1 Open Space agricultural valuation on land used for beekeeping. Your qualifying acreage is taxed on what it produces rather than what it would sell for, which is why the taxable value typically falls by 90% or more. It is not strictly an exemption — the land is still taxed, just on its agricultural productivity value.

To qualify you need 5 to 20 acres of open land, not counting your homestead; an active colony count that meets your appraisal district's published standard; and a filed Form 50-129.

What sets beekeeping apart from other qualifying uses is how much the standard varies by county. Each appraisal district sets its own degree-of-intensity requirement — hive counts, acreage steps, and in some counties how long colonies must stay on the property. We verify each district's published standard directly with them. The 43 counties we serve are listed below with the exact requirement for each.
